I just saw the Director"s Cut and it was INCREDIBLE! It disturbed and delighted in equal measure. The emotional payoff was darker and more deeply felt than the original theatrical release. I felt that the beginning of the film was definitely tied to the entire film. From the references to her parents arguing over materialistic possessions representing our capitalistic dog-eat-dog society, to how the way American society treats our elderly (which might have something to do with why the sister took the parents along with her) Florence Pugh"s character had to bear all of those things without a family, as her boyfriend is no family. All I"m saying is the first twenty minutes are imperative to the film"s emotional payoff. NO ONE can understand her grief. But these people can share her grief. I strongly recommend seeing the Director"s Cut, because it illuminates the aspects of the film I think could be easily overlooked upon initial viewing. This, sir, is an A plus film. Skoal.

Hes a very brave man for doing this to educate people, and to have escaped in the first place x. Why are people calling this an unrealistic trip? They way they depict her thoughts spiraling downward into panic perfectly portrays what a bad trip is like, especially when she stands up and her perspective shifts and she freaks out. That is how a trip goes bad. Not everything is meant to be taken literally here, they are doing so much to show us what her character is truly feeling at this moment and where her thoughts are. If you are stuck focusing on the woah trippy visuals! and nothing else, that"s your problem. Like others have already stated, there is no way to perfectly capture a shroom trip on screen but the effects are there to show a change in visuals, there are about a dozen other ways they could have done it too. Try focusing on how she is feeling, her paranoia, and sinking down into bad thoughts. That is what the scene was trying to accomplish and did so very well.

It took me more than six months to watch this work, discouraged by your criticisms of the film. But after watching many great movies of 2019, I decided to give this one a try. For me it was an unbelievable experience. I still found this work to be superior to Hereditary. Cinematography is absolutely perfect, the elements of distortion in the middle of the scenes are unbelievable. The slow way of telling the story, progressing little by little, amid the richness of details that the film gradually presents in order to compose a whole, is methodical and well composed. As for the content, it is far from incomprehensible. For example, one of the two main characters who refuse to leave the camp even after witnessing an atrocity, do so because they are imbued with an anthropological view of reality, in which they abstract from it the judgment of values. Something that has become urgent in our society, and that in their specific case, leads them to become victims of that same society that they thought they knew so well. Demonstrating the impossibility of knowing something, without attributing values. What obviously reminds us, for example, of the Social Justiciers and their attempt to equate all societies, including the most barbaric ones, through this same expedient. And there are many other clues in the work regarding this, such as the tragic end of the character Mark, after peeing on an ancestral tree. And this is not even a subjective interpretation, it is very clear in the film. The scope for interpretation in many other aspects, including the ending, but in general everything is clearly stated. And in general it seems to me more a criticism of the pagan model of society than of Christianity, as I saw so many people here interpreting.

The reason the movie ends with Dani smiling (imo) is because she"s been depressed for months and this is the first time she feels embraced and understood since the death of her. wait for it. FAMILY. We know from early on in the movie that Christian was planning on breaking up with her before he finds out about what happened. When we meet him he"s already emotionally checked out, but he stays faithful to her because it"s the decent thing to do, because it would look bad if he followed through on his original plan. He doesn"t actually have a change of heart, though. When he"s comforting a grieving Dani, he looks like he"d rather not be there. He"s there for her physically, ambivalently not emotionally, spiritually, ardently, etc. If her family"s demise is the gaping wound in her soul, the lie of lingering as her boyfriend is a band-aid. What festers underneath is her disproportionate wrath when she finds out that he doesn"t actually care for her. Christian got what was coming, not for cheating on Dani, but for pretending to care and dragged his friends down with him. or, haha theme go whoosh.

These movies aren"t always supposed to have jump scares and constant killing. A24 Movies are special. They are for people who see the bigger picture and understand what makes a movie great. Its like a gritty drama hybrid that makes you cringe. And that"s what makes their movies special. they"re mysterious and sensitive. I have a stupid theory to share: When the old man that failed to die by jumping, there were four people that have to hammer him, I think they"re from different age group, spring, summer, fall, winter. So the youngest one has to hammer first then the oldest the last. We know their life is divided by an 18-years season. What does 18 look like if you rotated the "8" 90 degrees and put "1" below it, yes a hammer, although the hammer used doesn"t look that obvious. Since 4x18 is also 72, if you add the old man"s age it will be 144, as an angel number it means The angels are asking you to maintain a positive and optimistic attitude and outlook on things, especially regarding some new ventures you are about to undertake., this is what I got after watching it one time, thinking about it before sleeping, then looking up the number today.

When they first get to the village & the others are running around playing a game they ask what they are doing & Pelle answers that they are playing skin the fool. Later when Mark is killed it"s revealed that he was skinned. At the end his skin is stuffed like a doll & dressed up in a jester costume so he looks like a fool. He was the character added for comedic effect in the film, like a jester. The crying scene when Dani finds out Christine is cheating on her was one of my favorite parts of the film. The crying reminded me of a trick one might do with a baby. It"s where you mimic their cry & they grow confused & sometimes stop crying. Also the villagers do it a lot. When the man vreaks his legs with the jump & he screams in agony they all start screaming with him. In the end when the fire is happening they start crying & screaming when the people in there start. It"s like a form of unity for them. I know it"s supposed to be weird & unsettling but it kind of calmed me. In my culture elders used to do a similar thing during funerals. When someone is grieving & starts crying a lot of them immediately go to them & start crying hard too. Soon a group of women are crying hard in front of a body. It shows unity & compassion. We don"t do it much anymore but once in a while I still see the older women doing it. The younger generation not so much. I never did it but when my mother died I was surrounded by crying elders & it was comforting for me at least.
